ABOUT
THOMPSON SHONA IMPORTS
Colin Thompson
and his wife June were born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa. Colin left
Zimbabwe in the late 1960's to pursue his education in the United States.
After completing his undergraduate studies he could not return to Zimbabwe
(then known as Rhodesia) to re-unite with his lifelong sweetheart. So
they met in neighboring Zambia in 1973 and married.
After
several years of farming in Zambia and Malawi and working in Corporate
Zimbabwe, they decided in 1989 to emigrate to the United States with
their four children. It did not take long before they realized the many
opportunities that existed in this country and in 1991 they started
Thompson's Import & Export. Its main objective: To import a variety
of high quality products from the Southern African region. Advice from
a successful businessman in Indianapolis, steered the business towards
focusing on one product: Shona Sculpture. This resulted in frequent
trips to Zimbabwe to study the art form and set up a solid infrastructure
of sculptors. Colin's sisters serve as the direct middleman to the sculptors.
In 1997 Thompson's Import & Export was incorporated and in the same
year Zimbabwe Gallery I was established in Philadelphia. (Every family
member is involved in one way or another.) Zimbabwe Gallery 1 is the
only travelling gallery participating in art shows, festivals and conventions
throughout the country.
The Thompson's second eldest daughter is now sculpting herself and is
instrumental In restoring damaged pieces. The company's mission is to
provide clients with the best product and uncompromising service. With
this background and commitment, customers are assured of the best.
